The return journey can be made by an alternative route till the trail joins at Suketar in Taplejung for the last camp of the trek. Located on the eastern border of Nepal with India, Mt. Kanchanjunga at an elevation of 8585 m is the third highest peak in the world. Only recently opened to trekkers, the Kanchanjunga region with its treasuries of snow is also home of an unusually large concentration of Nepal's birds and wildlife. The mountain is held sacred and early expedition was not allowed to proceed all the way to the top so that they would not step on the sacred ground.
